Response from the British Marine Finfish Association (BMFA), the representative body for marine finfish farmers, to the announcement from Seafish that it is to pull out of its Ardtoe Marine Farming Unit by autumn 2003.

Alastair Barge, chairman of the BMFA said: "We are disappointed that Seafish will pull out of the Ardtoe Marine Farming Unit later this year because the facility has played an important role in the development of the UK marine finfish farming sector.

"However, we are encouraged that Seafish is still exploring interest with other organisations to try and secure the future of Ardtoe as an aquaculture research centre. We are also encouraged that Seafish has signalled its intention to support the marine finfish farming sector through other means and is currently developing a strategy for aquaculture.

"Over the next few years marine finfish farming will become an increasingly important supply source for species such as cod, haddock and halibut, and it is vital that the sector receives maximum support to ensure it reaches its full potential."
