Welcome to the British Marine
Finfish Association's website, which provides a comprehensive overview of the
work carried out by the BMFA, highlighting the importance of this growing segment
of the aquaculture sector.
In many areas of the world
fish is a dwindling wild resource, yet at the same time consumer demand for seafood
continues to grow. This is why the development of the farming of marine species
such as cod, halibut and haddock is going to play an increasingly important role
in filling the 'fish gap' between supply and demand.
Marine finfish aquaculture
offers salmon farmers and others in the industry a unique and exciting opportunity
to diversify and provide real economic opportunities for many remote coastal communities.
All our members are committed
to producing a high quality and environmentally sustainable food product, and
we are at the forefront of research to ensure that best practice procedures and
the most efficient rearing regimes are followed.
We envisage that within
the next eight to 10 years, the UK can produce annually up to 10,000 tonnes of
halibut, up to 25,000 tonnes of cod and 5,000 tonnes of haddock, creating 2,000
jobs with a first sale value of £100m. |
